“How to free yourself from a shoulder grab attack and apply ikkyo”
During the course of this week, we introduce you to the Ki Aikido curriculum of Shizuo Imaizumi Sensei, one of Koichi Tohei’s finest students. These video lessons by Shizuo Imaizumi have been excerpted from his in-depth Ki Aikido Course.
The principles of Ki Aikido stress the importance of relaxation in the face of an attack. In such situations, pouring forth your ki energy with enable you to move without creating opposition in your opponent. The ability to harmonize with an attacker’s movement will allow you to perform smooth, effective techniques.
The entire Ki Aikido curriculum along together with the historical background of Koichi Tohei’s teaching methodology are covered in Shizuo Imaizumi’s Ki Aikido Course.
In day 5 of our presentation of Ki Aikido by Shizuo Imaizumi Sensei, Sensei will cover Kata Tori Ikkyo, one of the core aikido techniques.
This is a summary of the main points of Kata Tori Ikkyo:
- You allow your partner to grab your shoulder for practice purposes.
- Although normally it’s difficult to move your shoulder, your legs are free and can be moved.
- Step straight back with your left foot keeping your shoulder level.
- Then draw your right leg back close to your left foot to draw your partner forward.
- If you leave your feet spread apart, you will be unable to perform the next action.
- Move your hand toward your chest to grasp your partner’s hand from above.
- Twist your hips inward while controlling your partner’s elbow from below with your left hand.
- Move your arm circularly and lead your partner down using ikkyo.
- Step forward to pin your partner.
