A family friend and my Aikido Instructor. The first and one of many who shared their knowledge of Aikido with me. My father, Edward Naughton, was his first student in 1962. I started in 1967.
I was a student of Robert Tann in 1958-59. He was a SSgt in the self defense section and I was a Sgt drill instructor at MCRD San Diego. The boss of the self defense unit was MSgt B.J. Carlisle. I last saw Tann Sensei on a brief visit and lunch in South San Francisco about 1980. He had been seriously injured in a crash as a police officer and was about to retire for medical reasons.
I’ll never forget his smile as he applied nikyo and said “I do this because I love you as a brother” and I went down with tears in my eyes! You must also remember that we were Marines.
