Roy Y. Suenaka

U. S. Air Force retired. Aikido and karate instructor. First taught aikido by Koichi TOHEI in Hawaii in 1953. Early foreign practitioner at the AIKIKAI HOMBU DOJO. Established the first aikido dojo in Okinawa in 1961. Relocated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1972 and remained there after retirement from the military in 1978.   • Who is continuing Mr. Suenaka legacy in the Charleston area? I recall two ladies Marguerite and Yoko, then Chad. Where now, some are abroad or other states, so I ask.

  • Bert, That’s a good question that I was also wondering about. I knew Yoko but I don’t think she’s practiced in many years, maybe since the mid 1990s. Marguerite sounds familiar but I can’t picture her. I remember Chad quite well. He is still in China teaching aikido & karate (click on Affiliated Dojos on the website below.
