Morihiro Saito: “The Fundamentals of Kotegaeshi”

morihiro-saito-kotegaeshi-4

In this video, Morihiro Saito Sensei explains in detail the fine points of Aikido’s kotegaeshi or “wrist twist” techniques:

  • Uke grabs in munadori (chest grab) to begin learning kotegaeshi
  • Nage blends with the attack moving to a 90 degree angle in relation to uke
  • At the same time, nage executes an atemi to prevent uke from leaning forward
  • Nage steps diagonally inward in the direction of uke’s shoulder to execute the kotegaeshi throw

It’s easy to see why he is regarded as such a gifted teacher because of his ability to focus on essential concepts and explain them in an easily intelligible manner.

In one sense, the survival and dissemination of these old videos is a great gift to today’s generation of aikido learners. The teachings of this charismatic aikido teacher are now readily accessible. Serious students have a wonderful opportunity to attend Saito Sensei’s seminars and take their place in turn to learn as did their predecessors.

    • I think broken wrists are a real concern when practitioners use pain compliance to force kotegaeshi to work. Though not achievable in every situation, I prefer to throw uke backward in kotegaeshi by stepping deeply into his blind spot. Done that way, no wrist pressure is even necessary.
