“THE ART’S FINEST TECHNICIAN EXPLORES THE DETAILS OF
ONE OF AIKIDO’S MOST IMPORTANT BASIC TECHNIQUES!”
Attaining a high level of technique in aikido depends upon mastering basic techniques. Shomenuchi ikkyo omote is one of aikido’s most important basics and is the building block for ikkyo through yonkyo movements. Perfect coordination between arms, legs and hips is essential to unbalancing your attacker and smooth execution.
In this technique, nage’s extended hand serves to entice uke to move. In O-Sensei’s 1938 book “Budo” it is clearly written that nage is the one who initiates the technique. It is also stated that both hands and feet move in unison.
Nage’s initial takes the form of an atemi to uke’s face. Nage blends and takes uke’s balance as he advances forward with his foot. This is followed by the ikkyo takedown and pin.
