Recommended reading: “Founder of Aikido (35): Birth Of The Kobukai Foundation” by Kisshomaru Ueshiba

The article below has been selected from the extensive archives of the Online Aikido Journal. We believe that an informed readership with knowledge of the history, techniques and philosophy of aikido is essential to the growth of the art and its adherence to the principles espoused by Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba.

In 1939 Mr. Fujita, Mr. Okada and Mr. Tomita proposed that the Kobukan Dojo incorporate into a “Kobukai Foundation.” Its approval in less than a year was thanks to kindnesses of some unexpected people. For example, the famous dancer Miss Renko Takayanagi brought a businessman named Mr. Shozo Miyazaka to the dojo for the sake of aiki with which she was deeply in love. She introduced him to the founder and at their first meeting he unconditionally donated twenty thousand yen toward the new foundation (perhaps about forty or fifty million yen in today’ s currency = approx. $160,000 to $200,000).

The Aikido Journal archives now include more than 800 articles in twenty different languages and numerous video clips. We are constantly adding new articles and translations in our effort to document aikido and related disciplines past and present.
