“Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei boards the plane for NYC in 1964”
While going through some old boxes of documents, we recently came upon a collection of old English-language newspapers published by the Aikido Headquarters Dojo in Tokyo. They contain a lot of good historical information that most of today’s practitioners have not seen. In the interests of better informing our readers and insuring that these rare documents survive into the next generation, we are offering a free PDF download of scans of the very first issue published in January 1964.
Here are the contents of the first issue of the 4-page newspaper:
- Aikido Headquarters Publishes English Language Newspaper
- Director Visits Dojos in Hawaii, Calif.: Waka-Sensei Kisshomaru Ueshiba makes an inspector tour to USA
- New Teacher to N.Y: Yoshimitsu Yamada, 4th dan, to USA
- New Year Greeted: Etsu-Nen Geiko practice held
- Olympic Team Tries Aikido: Japan Olympic Water Polo Team practices aikido

This is fascinating, Stan; thank you for making it available!
I notice that lettering shows through from the back side a little bit. I’ve had this problem occasionally when scanning. What I do to counter it is to put black paper on the back side. This blocks out all the ink from the back side. Since it also darkens the front image, I adjust the brightness/contrast of it — a quick and easy process — before saving it for later use.
You must be sitting a trove of goodies; thank goodness you have time to share some of it with your eager fans! — Rick Triplett
Thanks for the tip! 🙂
