The Aiki News Encyclopedia of Aikido by Stanley Pranin (download)

Stanley Pranin’s 1989 book titled “The Aiki News Encyclopedia of Aikido” is now available for download by paid subscribers of the Aikido Journal Members Site. This book, long out of print, is a one-of-a-kind aikido reference work that includes more than 800 encyclopedia entries, a subject bibliography with author index, a dojo directory, a chronology of Morihei Ueshiba, and detailed contents of the back issues of Aiki News magazine published up to the time of the appearance of the book.

The cover used here is not the original one of the “Encyclopedia of Aikido.” It is a new design by the author that attempts to convey a more modern look and feel suitable to the times.

Our ability to once again make available this historical work completely bypassing the printing and distribution stages perfectly illustrates one of the main purposes of the Aikido Journal Members Site. It has now become possible to preserve and disseminate important materials that constitute our aikido heritage thanks to the wonder of the Internet. Such documents as this book would be doomed to obscurity in an earlier age to the detriment of the development of aikido.

Below we have reproduced an early advertisement from an old issue of Aiki News that provides a detailed description of the rich contents of this book.

  • Thank you very much, dear chief-editor, for your labour of love!
I hope you have a successor who could continue your unselfish and invaluable work and safe it for true aikidoka(-s) keeping their attention not only for Aikido practice but towards Aikido history reflected history of all human beings and human nature.

  • Thank you so much to all of you for sharing this wonderful information. thank you for everything. this is an incredible and amazing gift for me. best wishes to all of you. “Ali”

  • THX as well, I published your offer to my former club in Spain and to my club in Gothenburg and in Jönköping. I hope some others get it. For me, it will be a perfect companion for traveling.
But the document needs some updates or are they not planned? I take as a reference our local teacher, Ulf Evenås: his rank is long ago higher than the one listed. I hope this helps. Regards. Carlos

    • Thank you very much for your words of encouragement. I am having to think through whether to devote the necessary time to doing a new edition. It’s very time consuming as it involves a lot of research. We will continue publishing huge amounts of material, it’s mainly a question of working out priorities.

Thank you for making this available! It’s still a very valuable source of information and for people who don’t own the book the scans (of questionable quality, especially the pics, unfortunately) may provide some information that is hard to get otherwise in a concise manner such as presented here. Personally I much prefer the printed book.

It would be a major effort to produce an updated version, much as one would be desirable, the book being 20 years old. Maybe the task could be spread among a group of editors? If you can find a sponsor to fund the project and if you can find it in your heart to lead such an effort, I would volunteer to be part of that group.

    Kind regards
    Roland.

    • I have some ideas about how the “Encyclopedia of Aikido” can be updated. It will most likely be done as a project within the Aikido Journal Members Site. I really enjoy doing this kind of research. Little by little, we are progressing and I plan to find time.
